On the 23rd of November, our class went to Madam Kwong's. Friday morning we all climbed into the van and set off to Christchurch. We got there around 12.30pm and parked at the restaurant. When we walked in, we had to wait for a few minutes as they were still cleaning our table. They then showed us to our table. It was a big round table that had a Lazy Susan on the top. Once we were seated, they brought the cart/trolley around to us. It felt strange with having the food with us as soon as we were there as you're used to ordering and waiting for your food. It was the opposite there. They brought the food first and then we "ordered". There is one person who "orders", they consult with the table group regarding what they want. With any true Chinese restaurant, only one person orders and it stays that one person. That same person is also the same person who goes to go pay. What happens is that they pass your table with the trolley, ask if you would like anything, if yes, they take out the bamboo basket or dish and put it on your table. The person of the cart marks down on your table's order sheet. When transferring the food from the baskets to your plate, you only take one thing at a time If you have any empty baskets, they take it and put it on their trolley.
This is what we got off of the trolley:
- Spinach & Pork Dumplings
- Coriander & Pork Dumplings
- Shrimp Dumplings
- Soup Dumplings (Ginger and Pork)
- Siumai Dumplings (Mushroom, pork and carrot)
- BBQ Steamed Buns
- Chicken Feet
- Tripe
- Rice Noodle Rolls (Shrimp)
- Rice Noodle Rolls (BBQ Pork)
- Glutinous Rice
- Jasmine Tea
- Pu'er Tea
Some key things that were really different from Dimsum compared to my upbringing:
- How the food was ordered
- How big and round the table was
- The lazy susan; this meant that everyone could access the food
